Yucaipa, California, located 10 miles east of San Bernardino in San Bernardino County, had a population of 54,542 in 2020. The city has a long history as the home of the Serrano Native Americans, who called the area Yukaipa’t, meaning “green valley.” Some descendants are part of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians today.
The Yucaipa Adobe, built in 1842 by Californio ranchero Diego Sepúlveda, is the oldest building in the city and a California Historical Landmark. The Yucaipa Valley supported a large Serrano population, who lived in the valley year-round and harvested in the nearby mountains. The Adobe was later owned by several families and eventually acquired by San Bernardino County in 1955.Nearby Oak Glen is famous for its apple orchards, many still run by descendants of the original families, including the Parrish, Wilshire, Rivers, and Law families. The Parrish Pioneer Ranch was founded in 1876, and the area remains a historic agricultural community.
