Wrightwood is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California, located 77 miles northeast of Los Angeles at an elevation of 6,208 feet. The population was 4,720 at the 2020 census. The town lies along the Pacific Crest Trail and was originally developed in the 19th century as cattle ranches, later growing into a residential and commercial community. Early ski enthusiasts discovered the area, and the Big Pines ski area opened in the 1940s with new facilities and ski schools.
Wrightwood experienced historical events, including legal disputes over wildlife in the 1930s, and developed into a full-time residential community with local schools like Serrano High School serving the area. The town has faced several wildfire threats, including the Blue Cut Fire in 2016, the Bobcat Fire in 2020, and the Bridge Fire in 2024, leading to mandatory evacuations.
