Upland is a city in San Bernardino County, California, near the border with Los Angeles County, at an elevation of 1,242 feet. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 79,040. The city was incorporated on May 15, 1906, and was previously called North Ontario. Upland sits at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains and is part of the Inland Empire region east of Greater Los Angeles.
Historically, Upland lies along an east–west trail used by Native Americans and Spanish missionaries, now part of the Old Spanish Trail. Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza traveled through the area in 1774 and 1775, establishing overland routes from Arizona to California that passed through present-day Upland. His expeditions contributed to the founding of San Francisco in 1776 and influenced the later founding of Los Angeles in 1781.
