Stevenson Ranch is an unincorporated community in the Santa Clarita Valley of Los Angeles County, California, located in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains, west of Interstate 5 and the city of Santa Clarita. Covering about 6.4 square miles, it includes around 1,000 acres of parks, recreation areas, and open space. Approved as a master-planned community in 1985, it had a population of 20,178 at the 2020 census. The area is home to several schools, shopping centers like the Valencia Marketplace, and is near Six Flags Magic Mountain. It has also served as a filming location for shows and movies like Weeds and Pleasantville.
Development of Stevenson Ranch began in the 1980s when Dale Poe and his company, Dale Poe Development Corp., purchased land and planned a large community with an eventual 10,000 homes. Construction started in 1988, with Poe donating land and money for schools. The project faced controversies, including lawsuits from homeowners and the city of Santa Clarita over environmental and infrastructure concerns, which were partially settled with payments for traffic improvements.
