El Segundo is a city in Los Angeles County, California, located on Santa Monica Bay. Incorporated in 1917, it had a population of 17,272 in 2020. The city is a major hub for the oil and aerospace industries, with much of its land dedicated to industrial and commercial use, including the large Chevron oil refinery.
Originally part of Rancho Sausal Redondo, the area was first settled by the Tongva Native American tribes. It became home to Standard Oil’s second West Coast refinery in 1911, which later became Chevron. El Segundo also played a key role in aviation history, hosting the Douglas Aircraft Company plant during World War II, now operated by Northrop Grumman.
