San Marino is a city in Los Angeles County, California, incorporated on April 25, 1913. Its population was 12,513 at the 2020 census, a decrease from 2010. The city is named after the Republic of San Marino, founded by Saint Marinus, who fled Dalmatia during the Diocletianic Persecution.
The city’s seal is modeled after the republic’s seal, featuring the Three Towers of San Marino, a heart-shaped scroll, and symbols representing the city government. Palm fronds and orange branches are displayed beneath the seal. San Marino celebrated its centennial in 2013, marked by the publication of San Marino, A Centennial History by Elizabeth Pomeroy, which later received an Award of Merit for Leadership in History from the American Association for State and Local History.
