Running Springs is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California, with a population of 5,268 as of 2020, up from 4,862 in 2010. It is located 17 miles west of Big Bear Lake and is known for the 3,400-acre National Children’s Forest and Snow Valley Mountain Resort, the first ski resort in the San Bernardino Mountains.
The area was originally settled by the Serrano people, who called themselves Yuhaviatam and used the region’s natural resources for food and medicine. Running Springs was formerly known as Hunsaker Flats, named after Abraham Hunsaker, and developed after state highway improvements in the 1920s. Geographically, the CDP covers 4.2 square miles, almost entirely land.
