Newberry Springs is an unincorporated community in the western Mojave Desert of Southern California, located at the foot of the Newberry Mountains in San Bernardino County. The area originally centered around Newberry Spring, which supplied water to the Santa Fe Railway in the 19th century and served as a camping site. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,895.
The community is about 20 miles east of Barstow, 40 miles west of the Mojave National Preserve, and 100 miles south of Death Valley National Park, covering 117 square miles at an elevation of roughly 2,000 feet. It has a desert climate with average summer highs of 107 °F and winter lows in the 20s, receiving less than 10 inches of rain annually. The region features desert landscapes including volcanic rocks, lava beds, sand dunes, mineral springs, and mud baths, supported by irrigation from the Mojave Aquifer.
