Mentone is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California, with a 2020 population of 9,557, up from 8,720 in 2010. It covers 6.1 square miles, almost entirely land, and features housing developments, bars, churches, and restaurants. California State Route 38 runs through Mentone, serving as a main street and a gateway to the San Bernardino Mountains, including Angelus Oaks and Big Bear Lake.
Historically, Mentone was a railroad town and health spa, named after Menton, France, with the townsite mapped in 1888. It first appeared as a census-designated place in 1990.According to the 2020 census, the racial makeup was 51.5% White, 4.7% African American, 1.3% Native American, 5.4% Asian, 0.4% Pacific Islander, 15.8% from other races, and 20.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 41.7% of the population. There were 3,344 households, with an average size of 2.84, and 70.1% were family households. About 34.2% of households had children under 18, and a mix of married, cohabiting, and single-parent households made up the community.
