Mecca is an unincorporated community in Riverside County, California, located on the north shore of the Salton Sea in the Eastern Coachella Valley. Surrounded by agricultural land, it lies in the Colorado Desert under 150 feet below sea level. Mecca has a hot arid climate with average highs around 88.5 °F (31.4 °C) and lows below 30 °F (−1.1 °C).
The Salton Sea was formed accidentally in 1905–1906 when Colorado River water flooded the area. Groundwater and irrigation from the Coachella Canal have turned the desert into farmland. Mecca holds extreme temperature records, including highs of 126 °F (52.2 °C). Annual rainfall averages just 3.05 inches (77.5 mm), with highly variable wet and dry years and occasional extreme rainfall events.
