Maywood is a small city in Los Angeles County, California, covering 1.18 square miles, making it the third-smallest incorporated city in the county. It is bordered by Bell, Vernon, Huntington Park, and Commerce. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,138. In 2010, Maywood became the first California city to outsource all municipal services, including dismantling its police department.
The land was originally inhabited by Native American tribes and later became part of a Spanish land grant to Manuel Nieto in 1781. The city was named after May Wood, a real estate worker, in 1919, and officially survived efforts to dissolve it in 1924. Maywood has a history of automobile manufacturing, with Chrysler and Ford assembly plants operating there from the 1920s through the 1950s, before closing or relocating operations.
