Marina del Rey, Spanish for “Docks of the King,” is an unincorporated seaside community in Los Angeles County, California. It is North America’s largest man-made small-craft harbor, with slips for about 5,000 boats, and is a popular destination for boating, water recreation, and tourism. Activities include paddleboarding, kayaking, yacht charters, cycling, walking along the waterfront, and wildlife watching, including sea lions, harbor seals, dolphins, and whales.
Located about 4 miles south of Santa Monica, 4 miles north of LAX, and 12.5 miles from downtown Los Angeles, the harbor is owned by Los Angeles County and managed by the Department of Beaches and Harbors, with state and federal environmental oversight. The population of the Marina del Rey census-designated place was 11,373 in 2020, though the broader 90292 ZIP Code area has over 21,000 residents, many of whom identify as living in Marina del Rey.
