March Air Reserve Base (March ARB), formerly March Air Force Base, is located in Riverside County, California, near Riverside, Moreno Valley, and Perris. It serves as the headquarters for the Air Force Reserve Command’s Fourth Air Force and hosts the 452nd Air Mobility Wing, the largest air mobility wing in the Fourth Air Force. The base also supports units from the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, and California National Guard. Covering 2,075 acres, it was a Strategic Air Command base during the Cold War.
Established in February 1918 as Alessandro Flying Training Field, it was renamed March Field in honor of 2nd Lieutenant Peyton C. March, Jr. It was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps created after the U.S. entered World War I. The base was built in response to military expansion efforts and Congressional support for air power, with local advocates securing approval to construct the airfield near Riverside, originally used by aviators from Rockwell Field.
