Lomita, meaning “Little Hill” in Spanish, is a city in Los Angeles County, California, with a 2020 population of 20,921. The area was first settled by the Gabrielino people and later became part of Spanish California after exploration by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. In 1784, Rancho San Pedro, including modern-day Lomita, was granted to Juan José Domínguez. Over time, the land was divided among family members, sold, or legally confirmed under Mexican and U.S. governments.
Lomita incorporated as a city on June 30, 1964, to prevent annexation by nearby cities and limit high-rise development. It covers 1.9 square miles, though it originally spanned 7 square miles, much of which was annexed, including the area now known as Zamperini Field. The city established a sister city relationship with Takaishi, Osaka, Japan, in 1981.
