Loma Linda, meaning “Beautiful Hill” in Spanish, is a city in San Bernardino County, California, with a population of 24,791 as of the 2020 census. The central area was originally called Mound City, and the eastern half was the unincorporated community of Bryn Mawr.
Historically, the area was home to the Tongva village Wa’achanga, later occupied by the Cuhuilla and Serrano. In the late 1800s, it was developed as a tourist area called Mound City, but the project failed. Businessmen and physicians later converted the Mound City Hotel into a health resort, renaming it Loma Linda. In 1905, Seventh-day Adventists John Burden and Ellen G. White purchased the property and opened the Loma Linda Sanitarium. Loma Linda University was founded in 1906.
