Landers is an unincorporated community in the High Desert region of the Mojave Desert, San Bernardino County, California, with a population of 2,982 as of 2017. Residents are sometimes called “Landroids,” reflecting the local UFO culture, and the town’s slogan is “Beautiful Skies, Miles of Smiles,” chosen in 2014. Known as “the land of 1000 vistas,” Landers was first settled in the early 20th century by gold prospectors, including Charles Reche in 1914.
From the late 1940s to the 1970s, Landers was a popular site for UFO conventions, especially around the Integratron and Giant Rock. The area was the epicenter of the magnitude 7.4 Landers earthquake in 1992, which caused significant damage and one fatality. Today, the Morongo Basin Historical Society is located in Landers, housed in the town’s original post office.
