Fort Irwin is a census-designated place on State Route 62 in San Bernardino County, California, about 10 miles west of Yucca Valley. It lies on the western edge of the Mojave Desert and near the northern edge of the Coachella Valley, making it generally dry, with summer thunderstorms from monsoonal moisture and winter rains from Pacific storms. The CDP covers 25.2 square miles, all land.
As of the 2020 census, Fort Irwin had a population of 3,514 with a population density of 139.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup was mostly White (73.8%), with Hispanic or Latino residents making up 20.9%. There were 1,624 households, with an average household size of 2.16. Families made up 50.9% of households, and 39.3% of households consisted of one person. The median age was 49.8 years.The CDP had 1,960 housing units, with 82.9% occupied 74.4% owner-occupied and 25.6% rented. In 2023, the estimated median household income was $56,821, the per capita income was $33,049, and about 22.9% of the population lived below the poverty line.
