Westmont is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California, located in South Los Angeles just east of Inglewood. It is classified as a census-designated place (CDP) and had a population of 33,913 in 2020, up from 31,853 in 2010. The area covers 1.8 square miles, all land, and borders the Vermont Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Historically, Westmont got its name from being west of Vermont Avenue. The community has faced significant challenges, including high unemployment, which reached 23.6% in 2009, and a history of gang violence. A section of Vermont Avenue shared with Vermont Vista was nicknamed “death alley” due to frequent killings, and the area was long influenced by the Underground Crips gang.
