Westlake Village is a city in Los Angeles County, California, on the western border with Ventura County. Incorporated in 1981, it became the 82nd municipality in the county. The 2020 population was 8,029. The city is named after the master-planned community around Westlake Lake, which straddles Los Angeles and Ventura counties, with much of the area in Thousand Oaks.
Historically, the land was part of Rancho El Conejo, originally inhabited by the Chumash people around 3,000 years ago. The Chumash lived off hunting, fishing, and gathering, with villages like Hipuc, Satwiwa, and others scattered throughout the valley. They wore clothing from animal skins and decorated their bodies with paint and beads. Europeans first encountered the Chumash in 1770 during Gaspar de Portolá’s expedition, with Father Juan Crespí documenting the area’s abundant resources.
