Rolling Hills Estates is a mostly residential city in Los Angeles County, California, located on the northern side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, facing Torrance. Incorporated on September 18, 1957, it was Los Angeles County’s 60th municipality. The city has a population of 8,280 as of the 2020 census, up from 8,067 in 2010. Historically, the area was part of Rancho San Pedro, later known as Rancho El Elastico before incorporation.
The city covers a total area of 3.6 square miles, with 1 percent of it being water. Rolling Hills Estates features many horse paths and is situated in a region prone to landslides. Notably, the Peartree Lane Landslide in July 2023 destroyed several homes, with the slide possibly starting in 2022.
