Murrieta Hot Springs is a neighborhood in the eastern part of Murrieta, California. It was officially annexed into the city on July 1, 2002. Before that, it was a census-designated place in Riverside County with a population of 2,948 in the 2000 census. The ZIP Code changed from 92362 to 92563 in the early 1990s.
The area developed around natural hot springs that became a popular resort in the 1880s and later served as a college and conference center in the 1990s. Covering about 1.3 square miles, the neighborhood is close to French Valley Airport, which has a 6,000-foot runway.Historically, the Luiseño people called the springs Cherukanukna Hakiwuna and used them for bathing and healing. Spanish settlers and later developers also valued the springs’ therapeutic properties. The site was developed in 1884 by the Temecula Land & Water Company and later purchased in 1902 by Fritz Guenther, who expanded it into a well-known resort featuring hotels, cottages, a bathhouse, and spa facilities. The Guenther family operated the resort until the late 1960s, making it a historic landmark in the region.
