North Shore is a small census-designated community in southeastern Riverside County, California, located along the northeast shore of the Salton Sea. Once a popular vacation destination, the area declined as the sea’s salinity and pollution increased. The 2020 census recorded a population of 3,585. A key landmark is the North Shore Beach and Yacht Club, designed by Albert Frey and opened in 1962. It closed in 1984 after rising water damaged its jetty but was restored in 2011 with a $3.35 million grant and now serves as a community center and historical site. The nearby North Shore Motel was demolished in 2008, and the Salton Sea History Museum later moved to Mecca, California.
Historically, the region was home to the Desert Cahuilla people, who traveled between their village in Martinez and Dos Palmas Spring along the ancient Halchidoma Trail, which passed through what is now North Shore. The area is accessible via State Route 111 and lies near a wildlife refuge and campground.
