Walnut, California is a city in eastern Los Angeles County with a population of 28,430 as of the 2020 census. It sits in the Walnut Valley, bordered by the San Jose Hills to the north and the Puente Hills to the south. The city is known for its master-planned neighborhoods featuring large single-family homes and its top-rated school system, the Walnut Valley Unified School District, along with Mt. San Antonio College.
Covering about 9 square miles, Walnut has a strong local economy and one of the highest median household incomes in the U.S. at around $133,762 (2023 estimate). The city’s name comes from the Spanish word nogales, meaning “walnut trees,” which once grew abundantly in the area. Incorporated in 1959, Walnut operates under a city council–city manager government with five council members and a mayor chosen annually.
